Zuurberg Weekender

New Zuurberg Weekender a great escape for entire family

A new mountain bike event which provides a proper challenge while having an emphasis on fun and relaxation will be launched in mid-October when the Zuurberg Weekender is hosted by Hayterdale Trails in the Addo region.

It is a great opportunity to escape to the stunning surrounds of the Zuurberg mountain range, barely an hour’s drive from Gqeberha in the Eastern Cape.

The inaugural event, which offers two days of spectacular routes crafted by the owners of Hayterdale Trails, will be held from October 15 to 17.

Co-owner Trevor Hayter described the non-timed Zuurberg Weekender as “a ride rather than a race” and said that, in these trying times, it was an ideal opportunity to recharge one’s batteries.

Riders, he said, would enjoy a decent challenge over distances of 60km and 40km over the two days, while there was plenty to do off the bike on a weekend designed to create enjoyment and camaraderie.

“First and foremost, we want to provide the entrants with a memorable biking experience so we have created some wonderful routes for them to tackle over the longer distances,” he said.

“But there are so many activities to enjoy in the region that we also see it as a chance to get together with family or friends, who will have plenty of entertainment options while the riders do their thing.

“Even for the entrants, it won’t be a full day of riding so they will also have an opportunity to enjoy the wide range of activities available in the area.”

The organisers have not forgotten the younger set and have devised routes of between 10km and 15km to suit their capabilities.

Further extending the overall appeal of the two-day event is the fact that e-bikers, a fast-growing sector of the sport, will be welcome to join in.

With provisions in place to fully refund entrants if the event does not take place due to Covid-19, interested parties are urged to sign up as soon as possible as the field will be limited to 80 participants.

Accommodation is at the Zuurberg Mountain Inn atop the Zuurberg pass or in luxury tents with facilities at Hayterdale Trails in the valley below. All entry packages include meals from Friday dinner to Sunday lunch.

The organisers can be contacted for family options.
